The Sydney Community Collaborative has commissioned Older and Connected, a report by Michael Fine and Bob Davidson that examines the growing impacts of social isolation and loneliness on older people. The report calls for coordinated action from all levels of government to strengthen local responses and invest in community-led solutions.
Older and Connected explores how social isolation and loneliness are rapidly increasing among older Australians, and why local community-based solutions are essential to addressing the problem. Drawing on national research and a detailed Sydney case study, the report outlines the personal, social and economic impacts of disconnection, highlights the strengths and gaps within current aged-care systems, and proposes a practical, place-based approach to rebuilding social support networks. It makes the case for sustained investment, coordinated government leadership, and stronger local ecosystems that help older people stay connected, healthier for longer, and less reliant on high-cost aged-care and health services.
