What is this Project about?
The Project will recruit, train and support 25 community peer educators about the risks of disasters, in particular heatwaves and how to manage health and wellbeing during extreme hot weather. Once trained, the Peer Community Educators will be supported to deliver information sessions to their local community
How long do I have to commit?
The project will run for 12months. Ideally, we would need your involvement for the whole 12 months period. Over the 12 months you would need to dedicate about 40 hours to the Project.
Do I need experience?
No. All you need is an interest in helping your community and be comfortable speaking in a group setting.
Do I need to be able to have good English reading and writing skills?
Basic English reading and writing is what you will need to be part of this Project. You will get lots of support.
Do I have to know how to use a computer?
That would be good- but don’t worry if your computer skills are not up to scratch. We will help you build your skills through this Project.
What will I be doing?
If successful, you will become part of Inner Sydney Voice Peer Community Educator Team. You will:
Undertake the Peer Community Educator Training Workshop. This will be a full day session 10am – 4pm. You will have a few dates to choose from. All will be held in August 2025 including one workshop being offered on Saturday.
Meet with other peers every 6 weeks or so.
Plan and present up to 5 Heatwave Ready Information sessions in your local community.
Attend community events/festivals and provide information to community on heatwave preparedness
What happens if I sign up and then change my mind?
It is okay. We get it., Sometimes things do not work out the way we planned. You are not obliged to continue if you are no longer able to or want to.
After I express an interest, what happens?
Charlie from ISV will connect with you and set up a time for a chat. You will need to provide some information, including a copy of your photo ID, the name of at least one referee, and, if applicable, a resume or CV. This will be your opportunity to ask questions. You will be issued a formal letter of acceptance into the Peer Program after this conversation and receipt of all the required information to complete your enrollment. This is expected to be completed by the end of July 2025.
When will the Peer Training Workshop be held?
There will be 3 dates offered for this workshop offered during August 2025. You will choose one date that suits you. We will confirm dates once peers are recruited. We will include a Saturday session for people who work during the week.
Can you arrange childcare for me so I can participate?
Yes. Please let us know if you would need childcare to complete the one-day workshop.
Will there be resources provided to all participants?
Yes. There will be a load of fact sheets and links to further information for you to use. You will get a Peer Educator’s Pack that will also include a PowerPoint presentation, fact sheets, brochures, and information about services and support.
What do I get for being part of this Project?
We hope you meet new people and learn new skills. But you will also receive:
Certificate of Completion of Peer Community Educator Training Program
$100 for each community workshop you deliver
A reference letter after you successfully complete the Program to help you with your other interests and job hunting
Opportunities for more training and peer work in your community
Where are the training and workshop venues located?
Inner Sydney Voice HQ will be your Hub. We are based in Waterloo at the back of Waterloo library. But community workshops will be held across the region in community rooms such as community centres, libraries, community housing meeting rooms.
Will I be able to claim any out-of-pocket expenses?
Absolutely. You will claim any expenses such as travel to and from venues, parking stationary etc. All expenses need to be pre-approved – but you should not have to use any of your own money to participate in this Program.
Do you provide catering such as refreshments and food during learning and workshop delivery?
You might not know us yet, but we love our food. Food and refreshments will be provided for all workshops, meetings and training sessions.
