‘Don’t Lose Your Marbles!’ Mental Health Month Fun Day

The Inner City Mental Health Recovery Work Group is running a free community fun day on Sunday October 14 from 10am – 3pm at Ward Park, Devonshire Street, Surry Hills. Don’t Lose Your Marbles! is one of hundreds of events being held around NSW in October as part of Mental Health Month.

Don’t Lose Your Marbles! is a light-hearted approach to breaking down barriers of stigma around mental illness. It will consist of free coffee, free BBQ, information on mental health services and activities and games related to the theme of Marbles.

Mental health issues affect more than one in five Australians every year, with anxiety disorders being the most common mental health challenge, followed by depression.

The event is part of the ongoing activity of the working group; a coalition of agencies, public housing tenants and service clients who meet monthly to work and network about mental health related issues in the inner city of Sydney. The group meet at the Northcott Community Centre at 2pm on the last Tuesday of the month. All welcome!

Free Self-Care for Community Workers Training

Do you feel burnt out? Have you got compassion fatigue? Have you lost the drive and passion you once had? Maybe it’s time you undertook a little self-care.

Professional self-care is an essential underpinning to best practice in the profession of community work. Inner Sydney Regional Council for Social Development and the City of Sydney would like to invite community workers providing a service/program to the City of Sydney to attend this Self-Care training event. The training will take place on Wednesday October 24th from 10am-3.30pm and will be held in Redfern.

City of Sydney ‘PCYC GOT TALENT’

The City of Sydney PCYC will be hosting ‘PCYC’s Got Talent’ on Friday 5th October from 7pm to 9pm at PCYC City of Sydney/Woolloomooloo (51 Cathedral St, corner Riley St Woolloomooloo).

The talent show is open for all young people under 24. There are prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, as well as lucky door raffles, PCYC Raffle tickets and a Silent Auction.

This will be a red carpet event, so dress nicely. Ticket Prices are $10 for adults, $5 for kids and under 5 is free.

Equal Pay Information Session

Work in the Community Sector? Have questions about Equal Pay and how it affects you?

Then come along to The Equal Pay Information Session at Rozelle Neighbourhood Centre on October 17. This program is funded by the Australian Government and will be delivered by the Australian Services Union. The Sessions are open to all workers in the sector and all are encouraged to attend their local information session. Sydney Alliance City Assembly – ‘Change our suburbs, change our city’

Leaders from across Sydney Alliance partner organisations (unions, community sector and religious organisations) will gather to showcase the work the Alliance have been doing together on their campaigns for social inclusion, safe public transport and diversity within community support and health services. They will also hold public negotiations with decision-makers in some of these areas, and ask them for a public commitment to working on practical solutions for Sydney.

Organisations interested in exploring Sydney Alliance membership are welcome to attend.

The Sydney Alliance City Assembly will be held on Sunday 28, October at Sydney Town Hall at 2pm for a 2.30 start, concluding at 4pm. Registrations due October 12.

Homeless Women’s Forum 2012

The Sydney Women’s Homeless Alliance invites you to attend the 2012 Homeless Women’s Forum ‘Short Term Gaps – Long Term Solutions’.

The topics that will be covered at the forum include:

  • Sydney women’s homeless sector reform;
  • women exiting prison;
  • access for women and women with children;
  • transgender women; and
  • collaboration with the philanthropic and corporate sector.

Anti-Poverty Week

Anti-Poverty Week is a week where all Australians are encouraged to organise or take part in an activity that aims to highlight or overcome issues of poverty and hardship. Anti-Poverty Week will be held between 14-20 October 2012.

With Anti-Poverty Week just one month away, time is running out to organise an activity! If you are organising an activity please let the world know by registering the activity on the Anti-Poverty Week website www.antipovertyweek.org.au. The success of Anti-Poverty Week depends on individuals and organisations taking action to organise an activity with friends, colleagues or other groups.

Any activity, large or small that helps people to express their interest and concern about any aspect of local, national or global poverty is very welcome.

White Ribbon ‘Breaking the Silence’ Conference

The White Ribbon ‘Breaking the Silence’ conference will provide an opportunity for schools, school systems, consultants and government and non-government human service agency staff to gain insight into the issue of men’s violence against women and girls. It will identify the role schools can play in addressing violence against women.

Keynote speakers are Andrew O’Keefe, Chair of White Ribbon, Dr Sue Dyson, a Senior Research Fellow at the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society, La Trobe University and Janice Atkin, Senior Project Officer, Health and Physical Education, at the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority.

The conference will be held at Brighton-Le-Sands on October 17.

Inner Sydney Regional Council Annual General Meeting (AGM)

Inner Sydney Regional Council for Social Development will be holding our 36th AGM on Tuesday 23rd October 2012 at 4pm at the Inner Sydney Regional Council office, Rear 770 Elizabeth St, Waterloo (entrance via Kellick St). The AGM will be followed by an End of Year party. All welcome.
