VAST Training: Language Services – Getting It Right

Is communicating with your CALD service users a challenge? Are you keen to get it right? Are you after practical, useful and focused information on how to work with interpreters? Then this workshop is perfect for you!

VAST is hosting an interactive course that will include role plays and allow plenty of time for discussion. Topics covered include:
• Identifying good practice in language services
• Understanding the role of interpreters
• Accessing and booking of interpreters
• Briefing and debriefing of interpreters
• Learning more about your local multilingual context, including statistics languages

The workshop will be facilitated by Eva Hussain, a sought-after linguist, consultant and trainer and is to be held on Thursday 14 March 9:30am – 12:30pm at Level 3 Bowen Library, 669 Anzac Pde, Maroubra Junction NSW 2035

Cost: HACC workers $40

Connect Sydney Strategic Planning Training

The City of Sydney, in partnership with Inner Sydney Regional Council, is holding ‘Planning for your Organisation’s Future’ Strategic Planning Training Session on April 19th 2013 from 10am-4pm.

In this ever changing operating environment, community organisations need to ensure they look ahead at what is likely to occur and plan accordingly. This practical, hands on session will cover a basic planning process that will enable any organisation to better link their plan to their budget and accountabilities and minimise the risk of crisis.

Village to Village Bus – Public Consultation

Have your Say: Village to Village bus service – new route

The Village to Village bus is a free hop-on hop-off service for City of Sydney residents. The City is proposing an extra route between Redfern and Camperdown to give residents in Redfern, Erskineville and Camperdown better access to local services, facilities and public transport.

An extension to Green Square is also being considered.

Local Government NSW launched

The Local Government Association of NSW and the Shires Associations of NSW (LGSA) officially became one association called Local Government NSW (LGNSW) today, heralding a new era of strong council representation in a year of unprecedented reform for NSW.

Joint President of Local Government NSW, Cr Keith Rhoades AFSM, said this is a momentous day for the NSW Local Government sector with the former associations uniting as one to represent all 152 general councils, 12 special purpose councils and the Aboriginal Land Council of NSW.

“2013 is shaping up to be the ‘year of reform’ for Local Government in NSW with the Independent Local Government Review Panel soon to release its third and final discussion paper, and the Local Government Act 1993 and the entire NSW planning system currently under review,” said Cr Rhoades.

“Unifying the two former associations under the Local Government NSW banner will ensure we are better positioned to lobby the NSW and Australian Governments and drive change on behalf of our member councils.”

Joint President of Local Government NSW, Cr Ray Donald, said the Interim Board will be reviewing how it operates and will be visiting many member councils over the next six months to gain their input into the various issues affecting Local Government and highlight the benefits of one association.

“In the meantime, the day-to-day operations of Local Government NSW will continue business as usual with the former Office Bearers of the LGSA comprising the Interim Board of the new association, ensuring the ongoing representation of our members,” said Cr Donald.

“The Local Government Association of NSW and the Shires Associations of NSW have been working together for more than a century and the dissolution of these two historical associations is the end of an era, but more importantly, the beginning of a very significant new chapter.”

“In keeping with the reforms and evolution of the NSW Local Government sector currently taking place, Local Government NSW will lead the way for its member councils and play a fundamental role in shaping and cementing Local Government’s place in the Australian governance system.”

The new 24 person Board of Local Government NSW and the first President, two Vice Presidents (Metropolitan and Country) and Treasurer will be voted on by council delegates at the first LGNSW Annual Conference to be held at Sydney Town Hall from 1-3 October 2013.

On-line Community Map

Inner Sydney Regional Council is in the process of creating an extensive online map of community services in the Eastern Suburbs and Inner City. The map is very easy to read and navigate and will list each organisations details and services.

We will do all the hard work e.g. data entry and update, but we would like your input and ideas. On Wednesday March 14th we will be holding a mapping consultation from 10am -1pm at Inner Sydney Regional Council’s office, rear 770 Elizabeth St, Waterloo. If you would like your organisation’s details to be included, we need to show the format and get some advice from your representative about what information should be provided.

Celebrating Seniors Week in Randwick

Back to Prince Henry Day
Step back in time this Seniors Week and take a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era. Randwick City Council is proud to host Back to Prince Henry Day on Saturday 23 March from 10am to 4pm at the Prince Henry Nursing and Medical Museum, 2 Brodie Avenue Little Bay. Back to Prince Henry Day is a unique opportunity for everyone to see what became of the famous Coast/Prince Henry Hospital since it closed its doors in December 2003, after 122 years of service to the sick in New South Wales.

Friendly staff from a range of local community services will be available from 10am to 1pm on the day to answer your questions and provide information about services and support programs in Eastern Sydney. Come along and enjoy entertainment from the NSW Police Band and a sausage sizzle. The museum also includes a display of historical surgical instruments, a working iron lung and heritage photographs which tell the stories of patients and the people who cared for them. Behaving Badly or Brain Injury

Behaving Badly or Brain Injury? is a forum co-hosted by the Mercy Foundation & The Haymarket Foundation.

There is growing evidence that shows almost 30% of the chronically homeless population report having experienced a brain injury. Brain injury can lead to impaired memory and judgement, reduced impulse control and poor concentration. This forum will reveal how brain injury influences behaviour and help support workers manage and develop strategies to provide an optimal outcome for the individual.
